CHELMSFORD MENCAP has been established since 1951 we are a leading local Learning Disability charity based in Chelmsford, Essex and are predominantly run by volunteers.  We provide support, services and information to our members.  For details on how to join our charity and receive our quarterly news magazine, invitations and free gifts please click on the Membership tab above. View our Mission Statement.  Although we are affiliated to Royal Mencap we are not in any way funded by them.

Although based in Chelmsford, we are happy to accept memberships from around the county and further!

FREE EVENT Chelmsford Mencap 9th Annual Cathedral Service: Please arrive at 2:30pm for an hour and a half of entertainment watching our friends with special needs from around the county sing, dance and perform

VIP day at Woburn Safari Park: We have exclusive use of the park with a three course Christmas meal, special guest star appearances and a visit from Father Christmas all included in the price!

Chelmsford Mencap clubs and schemes for members with Learning Disabilities/Special Needs

Gateway Club

The Gateway Club is for people aged over 16 years.  They enjoy many activities such as bingo, discos, karaoke, darts, drawing or just chatting with friends. Entertainers regularly visit the club.  Around 40 members attend this club.

Gateway Dance Group

The Gateway Dance Group is for people aged over 16 years.  They enjoy professional dance tuition in partnership with The Boswells School and Footworks of Chelmsford on a weekly basis, and regularly perform at different events and shows.  Once a year the dance team are taken to see a top London Show.

Daybreak Scheme
Ofsted – Better education and care

Daybreak is for children between the ages of 3-18 years.  This scheme is Ofsted registered and runs during the Easter and Summer school holidays.  Children enjoy a variety of fun activities and lots of days out.  Visit latest news and events for Daybreaks next programme.

Gateway Kidz Club

Working in partnership with Woodlands School and King Edward Grammar School (KEGS) the Gateway Kidz Club is a term time youth club for children between the ages of 5-16 years.  The children enjoy fun packed themed sessions with outside entertainers visiting on a regular basis.

Outings & Events

We organise family outings and events throughout the year - all subsidised by up to 50% or more by Chelmsford Mencap.  Some recent events include Chelmer River Cruise, Mystery Tour, Pitch & Putt Day and Megabowl.

Adult Adventurers

The Adult Adventurers Club for 19's years and over runs during the Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays and are based at the Chelmsford College Campuses.  Members enjoy a variety of fun activities and lots of days out.  Visit latest news and events for Adult Adventurers next programme.

Chelmsford Mencap Youth Club

The CMYC for 16-25 year olds runs most Tuesday's throughout the year at St. John Payne (Middle School).  Members enjoy a variety of activities and some trips out during the school holidays.

AJ's After School Activity Club
Ofsted – Better education and care

AJ's After School Club is aimed at children between the ages of 11-15 years and is based at CNMSS Hayward’s Campus.   The AJ’s After School Arts and Performance club was launched by Chelmsford Mencap on 23 April 2008, in close partnership with Hayward’s Campus.  Students are supported by LSA's from the school and enjoy a variety of music, dance, art and drama workshops.

This project is run by Royal Mencap and is based at Chelmsford Mencap's premises on Mildmay Road, they also have premises in Braintree.
